Ten Tips for Making Rustic Furniture

If you are new to making rustic furniture, you have come to the right place. This website is designed to help you learn to make rustic furniture of your own.

There are a lot of reasons why you should build your own rustic furniture. Click the above link to find out why.

This brief article covers FIVE TIPS that will help you avoid some common mistakes you may encounter when learning to build rustic furniture. So let's get started.

Tip 1:
Get your frame right. Most rustic furniture will consist of a frame and then additions to the frame make the piece of furniture complete.

Most commonly you will see problems with chairs and tables because the frame affects how the chair or tables sit.

If there is to much lean in the back of the frame, the chair will easily fall over backwards or with a table, the top will not be level.

If the chair frame legs are not assembled identically, then you may have a seat that is uneven in the end. So make sure that you are careful in the construction of your frame.

Tip 2:
Predrill all holes when building with green wood. If you drive a screw or a nail into green wood, when the wood dries, it will split. As wood dries it shrinks thus causing the splitting of the wood around the nail/screw.

Tip 3:
Use a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the nail/screw to predrill your holes.

This will allow the nail/screw to tightly hold the two pieces of wood together, and as the wood dries it will become very tight without splitting.

Tip 4:
Predrill the holes a little over 3/4 the length of the screw or nail so that the tip grabs the wood very tightly at the end. The wood will not split and it will allow you to use the furniture even while it is drying.

Tip 5:
Draw out a plan of what you are going to build. This will give you a physical and mental picture of what your are doing and will save time. In the end you will have a better finished product.

Tip 6:
Use screws for your first few projects. When beginning making rusting furniture, you will inevitably make mistakes.

If you use nails, it will be very difficult to correct these mistakes. Using screws will allow you to disassemble part or all of your project and redo something if you mess up.

Tip 7:
Always gather about 20% more wood than you think you will need. You will usually end up using most of what you collect.

When I am making rustic furniture, I find that some pieces just don't look right or I break some in the process of building.

I usually always use that 20% extra that I collected. You won't regret collecting a few extra pieces.

Tip 8:
Unless you are going for the rusty rustic look on you furniture projects, don't use nails or screws that will rust. Your furniture will not last as long and it will discolor clothing that comes into contact with it.

Tip 9:
When making rustic furniture by good tools and good reference materials. You are saving thousands of dollars on furniture so don't scrimp on tools and reference materials like books, videos, and workshops. For every dollar you spend, you will save twenty, and you will become a better rustic furniture builder.

Tip 10:
If you have failures with your first few projects, don't give up. I would consider the first 3 or 4 pieces of furniture that I built to be failures. They were uncomfortable, flimsy, and for the most part ugly. However, I just kept at it, and it eventually paid off.
